The Joey Hannan Memorial Triathlons have proven to be extremely popular fixture on the Irish Triathlon Calendar, returning in 2011 for their 19th year. Each year Limerick plays host to hundreds of Triathletes who travel from far and wide to take place in these races.
This year there are 3 Triathlon distances available to participants.
Novice and Junior event: (300m Swim – 9Km cycle – 3Km run)
- Sprint Distance: (750m swim – 20Km Bike – 5Km run)
- Olympic/ Standard Distance: (1,500m swim – 40 Km Bike – 10Km run)
The swim portion of each event will take place in Limerick Universities 50M pool. Triathletes will be graded by their estimated Swim times, so that they share their swim lane with other athletes of a similar ability. After they complete the swim competitors will make the short run from the pool to the transition area, which is set up in a car-park adjacent to the pool.
The Bike section of the Joey Hannan Triathlon will take competitors out of Limerick city and into the surrounding countryside. The bike routes are undulating and generally on roads with a good surface (although thats a relative term in Ireland:).
The final Run portion of each race will take place within the University campus and will follow an undulating route. Those taking part in the Novice/Junior Triathlon will do 2 loops to complete their 3Km distance
Competitors in the Spirnt Distance Triathlon will complete a single 5Km loop and those taking place in the Olympic Distance Triathlon will complete two 5Km loops to complete their 10Km run.
The Joey Hannan Triathlon is a Triathlon Ireland sanctioned race and as such participants will need to either be a member of association or purchase a One day license.
The 2011 Joey Hannan triathlon promises to be an exciting day for all participants and a great opportunity for beginner triathletes to enter to world of Triathlon.
